A knee MRI scan reveals cartilage damage (such as osteoarthritis) much more accurately than X-rays, and especially inflammatory changes, ligament and coil damage that are not visible at all on X-rays.
In case of knee and torsion injuries, it is only magnetic resonance imaging that can reliably depict the easily damaged menisci and cruciate ligaments.
MRI is also used in cases of prolonged knee pain when an X-ray examination fails to pinpoint the cause of the pain, and a more precise diagnosis is needed. An MRI scan is also almost always done before knee arthroscopy to clarify the situation for the surgeon
